In Cape Town, South Africa, the Camphill Village West Coast farm is a fine example of growing food for local consumption.
The differentially-abled residents work in various areas of the village, such as in the dairy, homes, the bakery or on the farm. All products which are produced at the farm are used to feed the residents, and the surplus is sold at a variety of locations in Cape Town.
In 2023, the Camphill Village installed a Spowdi Smart Farming system to irrigate their crops with the help of the sun, a prominent resource in South Africa. The system is used to grow a wide range of herbs and organic vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and lettuce.

This year (2024), a visit to the farm drew a spontaneous reaction from the team that works on it. “Not even requiring a service!” explained one of them when asked about how the Spowdi Smart Farming system was doing.
The fact that the system is robust and mobile is greatly valued. By being able to easily move the system around, the Camphill farmers can place it wherever they need to irrigate their crops. As the crops from the farm are not only used to feed the residents of Camphill but also contributes to the organisation’s financial stability through selling the surplus, it is important that the harvests are healthy and rich. By using Spowdi’s solar-powered drip irrigation system, the farm can ensure that the crops get the right amount of water to be healthy.
